Video with transparency?

Postby rogerdee » Mon Mar 27, 2017 6:12 pm

We use animated gifs in some of our shows for things like a thought bubble over a character. We have some video that would work great for this and other purposes but can't figure out if there's any way to use video with transparency?

For example, we have a video of a countdown clock in Quicktime format. Ideally we'd like to use that in one corner of a slide. We also have some pretty cool animated thought balloons in the same Quicktime format but of course just placing them on a layer doesn't allow for any kind of transparency around the artwork. Perhaps it's just not possible?

PSP doesn't recognize the alpha layer in video files.

But, if you're working with alpha QT files you may possibly have After Effects (mov format?). One possibility would be to create an alpha video in AE. You can then import that alpha video into PSP and use it as a masking layer.

Or, if the thought bubble or other effect doesn't move, you could also do a screen grab of the alpha channel and use that as a mask in front of the background.

Another option is to just create the whole thing in After Effects and import the finished video into PSP.

Great input-- thanks much for detailed information Joel. We'll look into your suggestions and see what might work best for us.
