Any recommendations for free background music
Anyone have any suggestions for free background music? Google searches lead to many sites advertising free music, but mostly they mean DRM free - you still have to pay to access the music. Several searches on this site did not turn up any hits.
I'm primarily looking for background music for slide shows to publish on Facebook, YouTube, and my own site, and possible distribution via DVD/CD.
Thanks!

Another one you might try is: www.freeplaymusic.com You can search by mood, feel, keyword, or album. You can also "preview the music prior to download. And the tracks come in a variety of lengths and can often be looped, making them perfect for menus or short sections of a show. And it's all free! I find it very useful.

Regarding Freeplaymusic - did I mis-understand the terms of use ? as I understood it that for multimedia presentations you need to purchase a license, which compared to some other paying sites seems expensive to me?
I very possibly got this wrong as have had a most frustrating day - got capped and cut off the internet and after paying to get back on .. I ended up having to fight with the router [which is high up just under the ceiling] and make half a dozen phone calls ]

It's always a good idea to check terms of use for details. Yes, freeplay will cost you if you're using it for anything but personal use. They require purchasing a license to use their music for shows displayed anywhere online, if you're using it for client shows or anything commercial both directly or indirectly.

Great list you have there. Thanks for sharing.
I do have a question though. What's with the Creative Commons License? I've been hearing about it a lot but never get to understand it. How is it different from other forms of licensing agreement?

I know, kind of late on this post, but Wikipedia's sister site, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page, has a lot of media that you can use with limited licensing. Each file has a description of what the licensing criteria is, and it seems to range from simple attribution to a "use it for anything you want" arrangement. Good luck....Greg

Hi,
If you like his music--and many of us do--Kevin McLeod very generously allows his music to be used for just about anything so long as you credit him. I purchase a lot of royalty-free instrumentals--including SmartSound--and still find myself going to Kevin's music.

Kevin ( http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/ ) is definitely worth checking out - he has some good stuff. Also, while not free, SmartSound has some good stuff and their sale is on through this weekend ( extended through 3/15) and is very reasonable (their free utility allows you to create any length piece from their tracks too ). The problem with a lot of the "free" royalty free stuff out there is it sounds ... well ... free
