Suggestion for songs about Man's best friend

Postby KatzInAZ » Fri Apr 02, 2010 2:31 pm

My son had to put his 20 month old Lab puppy down today due to cancer. I'm on the hunt for some good song suggestions about dogs, man's best friend, friendship - you get the idea - as I'd like to make a memorial video capturing Cooper's (the lab) short but wonderful life.

Thanks.

Very sorry to hear that - my old female samoyed is on very limited days. A couple of suggestions for songs -
Wind beneath my wings - Gary Morris (or others like James Galway)
Thank you for being a friend - Andrew Gold
One Friend - Dan Seals

and my favorite (but sad) quote:

I have sent you on a journey
to a place free from pain,
not because I did not love you,
but because I loved you
too much to ask you
to stay.

Thank you for the suggestions Mikey. The quote is absolutely beautiful. May I use that in the video for my son's pup?

By all means - a good friend sent that to us some years ago when we had to put one of ours down. Couldn't have said it better myself. I can relate - I have a 5 month old, 2 year old and 12 year old Samoyeds. Saw a good bumper sticker today "My children have fur" with a couple of cartoon dogs on it.

Not sure how old your son is...But if he's a teen or more he may understand the song by the " Pirates of the Mississippi" Called Feed Jake..... Here are the lyrics... Great Song to listen to..

I'm standing at the crossroads in life, and I don't know where to go.
You know you've got my heart babe, but my music's got my soul.
Let me play it one more time, I'll tell the truth and make it rhyme,
And hope they understand me.

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I die before I wake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog,
My best friend right through it all, if I die before I wake,
Feed Jake

Now Broadway's
like a sewer, bums and hookers everywhere.
Whino's passed out on the side walk, doesn't anybody care.
Some say he's worthless, just let him be.
But I for one would have to disagree.
And so would their mama.

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I die before I wake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog,
My best friend right through it all, if I die before I wake,
Feed Jake

If you get an ear pierced, some will call you gay.
But if you drive a pick-up, they'll say 'No, he must be straight.'
What we are and what we ain't, what we can and what we can't,
Does it really matter?

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I die before I wake, feed Jake, he's been a good dog,
My best friend right through it all, if I die before I wake,
Feed Jake

Good Luck
Guy

Don - thanks for the song idea - I had forgotten all about that one! And thanks for sharing your video as well. I loved the pictures of Mr. Buds grey face.

Guy - I appreciate the lyrics as well. Very well put.

Cheers

If your son's dog is a golden lab, a beautiful song about dogs is "King of Cool". I believe it was written about a golden retriever, but it doesn't refer to a retriever so you could use it for his llab. The artist is Nancy Simmonds.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts, ideas, poems etc. Here's the first pass at the show. I tried to keep it simple, and let the song and pictures tell the story.

As a retired professional dog trainer and big animal lover, these kind of shows really get me choked up!! So sorry that his life was so short. Our pets are more than pets, they are companions and are sorely missed when they pass! You did a very nice job and the song was great!

Heartfelt Condolences,

I tried to watch your show, but it wasn't there. Did I do it wrong?

Harry Nilsson's - The Puppy Song is a great choice for his early life.
