A new advertising trend is comming our way $$$

Postby jean pierre L » Sat May 21, 2011 11:47 am

Good day to all of you,
I'm from Montreal and a new trend of publicity is spreading here. 46" plasma screens are installed in stores like drug stores, food chaines, etc... at the cashhere. (direct publicity). I approche a pharmacy manager that supervise 5 pharmacies. He would like me to produce several 15 secondes show to be incorporated in the home office advertisement system. Working with producer for several years, I would like to know if some one already made this type of shows? I'm working on a style of advertising but some help would be appreciated.
I've been waiting for this chance to come my way and I surely do not want to miss my chance to make a few $$$. This type of media is right down our alley. I will post my shows when my reachers will be finish and samples of my presentations done. Find more info at this adress

Hello every one,
Many of you looked at my post but no one replied. Its OK. I have made my slideshows and made my first presentation to my customer. The 30 minutes I spent with him give me the impression that he was very interested. Know I'm waiting for him to talk to is associates and a reply from him.
I had promised you a sample of my slideshow but I realised that my shows are in French and it would not have the same impact. On the other hand, I have found a video that explains the principals of a commercial slideshow. It is not a Proshow user but what counts is the principals that it is explained in the video. The video his very well made and for slideshow makers, it is very interesting. For my part, many statements are right. A question came to mind '' why Photodex does not provide such information for free?'' It would bring more customers.
Any way, for those who want to make money with there slideshows, have a peek at it and decide by yourself.
Have a nice day.

I was one of those who read your post and then left without saying anything, the reason being that I've seen no evidence of this trend in the area of the U.S. where I live. If this is true throughout the rest of the U.S., and if you combine that with the fact that a majority of the members are American, then there's your answer as to why no one said a word. :D

Well yes, the new way of advertising is already here. In Montreal one of the advertising company is Rosa Media.
http://www.rosamedia.ca/en/. Have a look. What I suggest is only for you to be prepared. I'm just passing the word. From there on, you can do what you want.
I have several photographic events to take care but I will post a slideshow in the coming weeks.
Have a nice day.

Here in Los Angeles There is a lot of this happening. Our Ralphs grocery store put monitors in at the cash registers for 6 months (I think was a test). They ended up taking them out. I suspect it didn't work locating them at the register. You wouldn't get out of line to go get an advertised product, and will have forgotten by the next visit! I see them in coffeehouse chains too. Las Vegas is full of this stuff!

What you are describing is called digital signage. I went to a digital signage convention in Las Vegas a few years ago http://www.digitalsignageexpo.net/. I was shocked at how many people had thought of my idea, LOL! Being a video editor/producer for many years, I was distressed to find out that digital signage was not really video at all, but similar to internet technology. All retail screens are networked to a corporate computer system. This system keeps all the assets (pics, video, text) of a "show". This show is not pre-rendered, but constantly changes. If it's Monday, the Monday specials are shown, if in the morning breakfast items are shown, etc. Lots of assets are timed, and text can be updated in real time and sent to the stores. This is all automated.

Here is a company doing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TwoxzzlhEI&feature=related

Using Proshow as digital signage has several disadvantages.
1. Can't show timed assets.
2. Can't easily or automatically update assets from a database.
3. Can't easily divide the screen into several concurrent displays.
4. Does not easily support 9:16 (sideways) display.

Now, you might be able to produce segments to run in an existing automated system, and that appears to be what you are looking into. Your biggest obstacle might be how quick and painless it will be to update.

Here are some tips...

1. Make sure you build your video using their specification: AVI/MOV/MPG, dimensions, codec, bitrate, sound (Y/N). Get it in writing. This will protect you from finger pointing when there is a problem.
2. Clear any logo usage. They will be very anal about color, size, screen time, other unintentional logos in view.
3. If the product offer is limited (Say only on Mondays), This limitation has to be on screen for the entire offer. That way if someone sees it on Tuesday, they know the deal is not valid. This is law in many places.
4. A slideshow for retail is a whole different ballgame than a home presentation. At home you have a captive audience, all you have to do is keep 'em awake and entertained. In retail there is an orgy of distractions, and it's a fight to get eyeballs for a couple of seconds, if at all. It's not entertainment, it's getting a message to the customer. 15 seconds in a retail environment is an hour at home. Expect people to glance at 2-4 seconds of your spot, not watch the whole thing transfixed! Will a random 3 second view get the message across?
5. Demographics - know exactly who they want to target. Selling something to grandma will not work for a pre-teen! Timing, style, content is all different!

I don't mean to come down on your idea at all, it's a good one. You would do well to go to that convention next spring in Las Vegas to see what the market is like. As for ProShow, it's limited as far as you can take it. You might want to look at using Scala http://www.scala.com/. One thing I found out at the convention was that most of these software packages were for RENT, not sale! That bugged me to no end...lol.

Good luck!
Mark

Mark, you've provided some very important detail on this business. Reading through everything you said, I realized that each point was obvious--once known about, that is.

I wonder if there's possibly an offshoot of this kind of thing that might be more amenable to slideshow producers and smaller, independent retail stores that can't afford what's likely a fairly high cost. Nothing specific is coming to mind immediately other than that it could be explanations of a service provided or glorious descriptions of products sold in the store. Maybe cooking tips for a kitchen supply store or fishing tips for a tackle store.

Barbara,
I think you've come up with an excellent idea. Mom and Pop stores might be a perfect customer base for slide show makers.

Hello Mark, Hello every one,
After reading your comments, I learn a lot. I didn't know that this system existed somewhere else. The digital advertising system what ever name it has, is developing very fast and correcting is flaws as per what I read on the web. Never the less I will be monitoring this type of advertising.
I must say that all what you wrote is through if you focus on specific subjects such as "specials" , " items on sale for a short time". Normally marketing plans are made very early, even many months ahead.
For my part I work more on generalities than details. I just had an order for 12 slide shows for 6 pharmacies. My presentations do not focus on products but rather on information's for the customers.
My first approaches was the one that you describe in your text. I realise very fast that I could not compete with the big marketing agency. I am not a marketing specialist. On the other hand, if I want to have a piece of this market, I had to get out of the box and try to see the big picture. For example: if you approaches a "Star buck" you should concentrate on the best coffee, fresh, the one that people likes. If you contact an orange juice producer, hit the flavour, the sunshine, etc.
I would like you to know that all comments made on this subject are very important to me. If slide shows makers like us stick together we could gain from it. I have ideas, you have ideas, lets put them all together.

I've seen screens at my local credit union. They play mostly informational stuff on theyir investment products and the like. I seem to recall seeing screens at a grocery store at the registers some time ago too. But it must have only been a test since they aren't there any longer.

I've been in quite a few doctor offices that have "health tips" showing on the screen in the waiting room.

As for this being a good for the Mom and Pop type store, I doubt it because they probably don't have the extra money to spend on this, at least not at the moment. Although the economy has improved, many small stores are forced to go out of business daily from lack of sales.

When I read all the comments, I understand that the actual economy is not at is best. Here in Montreal we do not have the same situation. Never the less the $$$ is very hard to get. What I've done to start, I suggested to a manager, a free slideshow for is business. And from there things started slowly. For my part, I charge 85$ per minute. This is a lot less than a video crew charges.
From there it is slowly picking up and from mouht to mouth my studio is rolling. There is not only negatives situations there is positifs ones also.

Wow thats great, but one minute. Looking at the video, it is mention that they will help us doing a video or slide show for 5$. Not that they are producing the slideshow.
