Hi Bart,

My understanding is that SEO is based on domain name, not IP address. Based on this, a static IP address will not make nay difference.

There are a lot of factors, domain name being only one. It's best to do research on it, making sure to read those articles with very recent dates since the methods used by search engines have changed over time. For instance, the meta data is now all but overlooked by Google, though this wasn't always so.

This is about the static IP address question. First we should clarify some terms. It is not static vs dynamic IP addresses it is shared vs dedicated. A dynamic IP address is one assigned to clients via a DHCP server. This is not done for web servers at a hosting company (and would only be done by someone that did not know what they are doing in a home network, which would cause said server to fail when the IP address changed. DNS would not locate the server unless it was in some way dynamic) The issue is shared vs dedicated IP addresses. In a shared hosting environment multiple websites are hosted on the same server. When Google looks at your site it would find it using its domain name (unique) and IP address. Why they would differentiate based on whether or not it uses a shared or dedicated IP address is beyond me, and I am not convinced they do. I hope this helps clarify.

I appreciate your taking time to help with this. There were a couple others a few days ago as well who tackled the issue, thanks to them as well. This is where I stumbled upon the "Static vs. Dynamic" IP address.

http://www.wordsinarow.com/seo.html

"Pick a Good Web Hosting Company

What type of website hosting company do you have? This can be very important to the search engines. Free website hosting is usually bad for search engine rankings, for several reasons. For a detailed article about how your website hosting company can affect your rankings in the search engines by Larisa Thomason (Senior Web Analyst for NetMechanic), click here.

The most important factor is that your website should have its own "static" IP address. In other words, its numeric IP address should be stable, and not be different every time someone types in your URL--that's called a "dynamic" IP Address and is typical of Windows IIS Hosting. Big hosting companies typically use "dynamically assigned" IP addresses which work this way: when someone types in your URL into his browser, the HTTP request is presented to your hosting company's server, which quickly assigns an IP address to your website files on its server and connects the visitor to your files. Some search engines don't like this, for various technical reasons.

But more importantly, if your web hosting company has some "bad hats" (spammers or pornographers or whatever) who have been banned from search engines for good reason, your site could also be banned "by association" because, to the Search Engine your site's IP address looks to be that of the bad hats. In the eyes of the search engines it has an identical numeric IP address -- the one that belongs to your web hosting company.

If you are serious about getting good search engine rankings for your site, you need to have a static IP address of your own. If you don't know whether you do or not, call or email your web hosting company and find out whether your IP address for your site is static or dynamic. If it a static IP address, they should be able to tell you exactly what your static numeric IP address is. Find out what that is. For example, the static numeric IP address for Words in a Row is: 65.38.173.39. You should be able to substitute your numeric IP address after the "http://______", type that into your browser and go directly to your website."

There is more should you browse the website I gave the URL to. Bottom line for me is it makes my head hurt and still confused. This is not the world I live in so it leaves me quite confused. But I'm sure sooner or later I'll get it figured out!!!

Thanks again for the help!! I appreciate your time and effort.

Not to be difficult Bart, but that is not how it works. 1st most hosting companies use Apache servers, not IIS. 2nd. even if an address is assigned dynamically in a windows environment through a DHCP server, this address does not change. It is assigned and stays the same because the DHCP server is set to assign the same address every time. Based on that, IP addresses don't change for web servers. If the web server hosts multiple websites they will have the same address. Even in that environment, you can ask for a static IP address from any decent host for a few extra dollars per month (some provide it free)
Further, I seriously doubt that a search company would differentiate on that criteria (I seriously doubt their software would know the difference, they would be presented with a domain name and IP address, why would you bother to check how the address was assigned. It makes no sense) and again, I have not seen anything that makes me believe they do that. Ask your hosting company to see what the various spiders do. See what they say.

Thanks Jim!

You're not being difficult, you are being most helpful. I ran into the website and the information they provided so then the issue, "can you believe everything you read on the internet?" So for a rookie it all gets very confusing. I am suspecting at this point that to get good search results ultimately boils down to paying for them.

Thanks again Jim, I truly appreciate you taking time to jump in.

Hi Bart and everyone,

I would really love it if someone that is a true SEO expert could chime in. Your thought that you basically have to pay for a good ranking is a bummer, but maybe you are right.
I followed all the SEO suggestions from the tool that I use - Expressions Web - but I don't know how good this is. I have read a few things, but I didn't hear much more. It is a big subject and I have seen a number of books at the local bookstore on this subject and doing a Google search reveals a lot of how to's and articles. Bottom line for me, I would love it if someone on this forum is an expert or knows an expert who might reply. Because I know how DNS works doesn't mean I know much about SEO. I don't. Can anyone help or point in the right direction.
Eventually (I have a lot on my plate right now) I will take the time to learn more by either getting professional help or finding a book I trust. Even with that, having someone on here to point to good resources would be great.

Take a look at Zenfolio.com. I have heard of several professional photographers leaning in their direction.

I have started working on self storage website design that will work for a self storage business. I am wondering if someone can suggest me the best web hosting company? Thanks in advance.

I had extremely bad experience with Go Daddy, but on the other hand, my experience with A-2 Hosting has been superb even though I bet some people haven't been quite as happy. In the end, the company you choose depends entirely on your needs, knowledge, and the way you prefer working. Research the various companies and then read reviews of them, taking care, in particular when reading extremely negative reviews. If there are a lot of them, stay away from the company; if the positives far outweigh the negatives, take a closer look at the company.
