I don't see how any company can claim something can last longer than the short time it has existed. My sister used to work for a well known company that made computers, periferals and storage media. They used to make similar claims about long term life span of CDs etc. That is, until they realized they don't actually last as long as they thought they would.
I have yet to bother with Blue Ray since those have been reportedly inconsistent and probably will be replaced by other storage means such as a thumb drive and/ or the cloud. What makes me uncomfortable about the cloud is trusting someone else to maintain it.

Speaking of the cloud and the Internet, it makes me wonder how Monday will turn out with this supposed shutdown going to happen because of a DNS redirect virus. How does a person check for that to prevent problems on our own machines besides having virus software up to date?

This is one of those things that will make stuff in the cloud inaccessible at some point. Bottom line, nothing lasts forever and all you can do is keep upgrading and hope for the best. The planned obsolescence related to technology has always bugged me but it's hard not to appreciate the advances that come with it. :|

Just be aware that you need a DVD burner that is M-Disc compatible, and there's still not a lot of those out yet. Once burned, any DVD player should be able to read it - so it's just the burning that's special to use these. Otherwise it looks like a neat technology.

If you are concerned about the DNS changer on your machine, check out this article at PCWorld - includes a link to check your machine.

Debngar - Scientifically they can look at how fast something changes/degrades over a certain period of time or under certain conditions and extrapolate into the future when that process makes something unusable. It is a prediction, but based on the best that we know at the time. I my experience is it's when the marketing types stick their noses into the process and 'nudge' the results and perspective to fit their ambitions. Humans are imperfect and so are some of our methods and the results, but we try. And if the disc only lasts 100 years and not 1,000 that would be enough for most people!

When Epson first came out with color inkjet printers they quickly found out that the colors began to change in less than 2 months! Ouch !!! Since then there have been great strides made in various types of color printing, and the 'estimated' longevity can be well over 100 years IF stored properly. Once again, I won't be around to see it fail.

I think optical media will have a place for a while to come. Thumb drives are still much more expensive than a disc, and when they fail - that's it, everything is gone - keep that in mind when getting a SSD (Solid State Drive). Most of us have high-speed Internet access but it's still not everywhere, so cloud storage services can be very helpful but not an answer for everyone yet. And not every TV can access the Web, so getting a show from the Internet to a TV can be problematic for many, especially if it requires more than picking a channel number! I also think people still like to have something tangible in their hands.

As for the DNSChanger problem, go here and click on the appropriate link to check: https://forms.fbi.gov/check-to-see-if-y ... -rogue-DNS

Hi Mikey,

Thanks for the link - doesn't seem like I have a problem with that DNS virus. I didn't click on the govt website link though. I definitely don't trust that one. LOL Seems like there should be other links that would help determine what is really going on than to visit a government website!

I noticed in the last several days that access is pretty slow both via mobile access and through my desktop, wondering if it's related though.

Access here is just as fast as always, so it's probably a bad alignment of stars over your part of the country.

I've been in video for 25 years now. DVD and dual layer DVD and higher density DVD formats will be around awhile. It's written by lazer into polycarbonite for duplication or pressed into molten polycarbonite if replicated.

Google "Archival Quality DVD". Keep your receipt...if it doesn't last 100 years get Visa to issue you a refund.

100 years lifetime is written here:
http://www.osta.org/technology/dvdqa/dvdqa11.htm

Must read this url:
http://vivtech.blogspot.com/2007/03/cd-and-dvd-lifetime-and-maintenance.html

USB....now that can be really expensive. Not for me.
Blu-Ray...no requests.
Dual Layer DVD...what a pain.

Stop chasing the holy grail. Keep it simple and stick with DVD. If your capturing process and editing process are excellent then what you master to DVD will be equally good. If you author then be careful in chosen algorithm options which you choose. Always maintain clean handeling of the media, no FINGERPRINTS, prevent scratches...don't use the DVD as a puck in air hockey.

Call me for a quote on CD or DVD duplication. I do it right, fast and economically. 1-888-383-2674
