Tic Tac Toe Template

I'm not sure what to call it or if I can even convey what I want. I would like to divide the slide into 9 equal squares mimicking a tic tac toe grid. Then I would like to pictures in each. But they wouldn't be restricted to just one individual square. So let's say I display 9 pictures, 1 in each square, then after a while I would replace the whole left and center column with one picture. Then after that I replace the now two displayed pictures with one picture that takes up the whole screen but is made up of the 9 pictures.

Can this be done? I tried it and the hard part had to do with the picture file itself. I tried to crop it in pre-production. Is there an easier way? Is masking involved?
