Great Article - What Font Should I Use?

Tue Feb 14, 2012 9:20 am

I've always found selecting a font for my shows a challenge.

I want to use something "special" for each show. I've encountered fonts that don't look right on the screen once I'm done. Fonts that have funky looking numbers. Fonts that are not really readable.

I have commended the guy at our church who does all our graphics. Typology is his thing. He can take old standards we all know, and make his copy just pop. Doesn't matter if its on the big screen or on the bulletin. You just know when it's Chris' work. That is a true talent.

He has begun to teach me some basics. And, today he sent me this article. I thought it was very good. Though it is written for print - it has application for our slide shows.

Hope you find it as insightful as I did...

Good one. Thanks.

One of my "old reliable" sources for many design issues, including fonts, is this:

The Non-Designer’s Design Book, Robin Williams, Peachpit Press

Very readable and easy to apply she covers a lot of ground in a small book. Excellent section on typography and an excellent section of the use of color. Likewise, she aims at printed product but it applies to way beyond that.

He did an excellent job of explaining the basics. Typography is a complete study in itself, and once you start noticing the tiny nuances, you become super-sensitized to fonts and what they "say."

Hello. My name is Barbara, and I'm a fontaholic.

I agonize over fonts and color used in my slide shows. My shows are purely for personal use. I just went through it finishing up a show about a trip to several Frank Lloyd Wright projects. I ended up using a font (Eaglefeather) and color (Cherokee red) that I read about while learning about FLW. The color is a bit dark but the font is great. No one will even notice. But my husband and I get a real kick out of see both in the show.

I'm going to read the article and book mentioned in this thread.

Thanks.

Barbara, one of the very first steps in understanding how to view and place fonts is learning to see your captions as if they're images, not words, because that's what they actually are. The dawn of writing was pictures used as symbols, and as time went on, the pictures were ever more simplified, but no matter how simple, letters are still pictures, and words are groups of pictures. :D
