Saving a show and how to avoid "stuttering"

Postby gpsmikey » Fri Jan 12, 2007 4:01 pm

OK, after seeing the comments someone else had on how to save a show
(see Andy's information in the following thread on that)
http://www.itsmygallery.com/ProShow/vie ... 5358#15358
(I also wanted to have a copy of Jennifer's Keyframe tutorial), I did some
more investigation and found a number of things that should help people.
First, on how to save a show from the sharing -- what you do is click on
the show you want to see. Presenter will pop up with it's opening thing.
Don't hit play though -- go to your temp directory that will be in the format
of C:\Documents and Settings\Mikey\Local Settings\Temp except of course,
"Mikey" will be replaced with your account name. In that directory, you
will find a file by the name of psg???.tmp where the "???" is a 3 digit hex
number (hex numbers are the "digits" 0123456789ABCDEF ). Don't bother
to refresh, just leave the explorer window open showing that file. When
presenter finishes downloading it, the size will suddenly jump to the
final size. At this point, copy the file to where ever you want and rename
it to what_you_want.px You now have a copy of the file (you can't move
it because presenter still has a handle on it). *After* you have made
the copy, you can exit presenter (without even playing it!!).
When you
exit presenter, that psg???.tmp file is deleted, but you already have your
own copy !!

Stopping "Stuttering" when playing a shared show ..
The good news about the way presenter does this is it also means
that for those people who have problems when the internet is busy
with the show "stuttering" part way through, what is happening is
the playback catches up to how much has been downloaded. If you
wait until presenter has finished the download, it should play clean all
the way through !!! :D

Hope this helps people (you may find it a bit different on your
system, but I suspect it will be the same. I am running XP Pro).

Mikey, Thank you so much for showimg me how to save my shows from sharing site. My computer crashed awhile back and I lost quite a few things including some shows I had done. I have only one question. I followed your intructions and it did copy the show to my computer. My question is this. Since I now have the show copied on my hard drive, is there a way to bring that show back into ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer and edited it, or make changes to it? If so, would you mind telling how to do this. Thanks in advance for your help

Steve

Hi Steve -- unfortunately, I don't believe there is any way to
"de-compile" (for lack of a better word) your show so you can
work on it again. If you have a DVD version of it that you made,
there are tools to edit the mpeg2 files used in a DVD, but that
is only to the extent that you can edit any video stream.

If you have not implemented some sort of backup plan, I would
suggest you do start backing up your system. Spare drives are
cheap these days. You can either image the whole drive or
just save the "data files" you want to with the idea of being
able to rebuild the system and copy your files back again.
Unfortunately, the only time most people consider backups is
*after* their system crashes. It is sad to see the posts in some
of the other groups (rec.photo.digital etc) where people have
lost all the pictures they had of their kid for the last 6 years
etc. They never made copies to another machine, CD or
anything.

Mikey: Thanks, I didn't think it was possible, wishful thinking on my part. Yeah, backups are nice and I am usually pretty diligent about doing that tasks. It just happened so quickly that I missed those files. Thanks for the reply

Steve

PS: Have any recomendations on the type of external hard drive to use as a storage place for backkups?

I sometimes use an external drive (actually an external case you
put a standard drive in), however, I usually use what is often referred to
as a "mobile rack" that is a cage that you put in your system then you
can put drives in the removable portion and swap the removable
portions in and out. The one I have been using recently is the
Kingwin KF22-IPF -- you can see it here
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817121107
Not a perfect solution, but it works for me. One consideration
on external drives is cooling -- one of the biggest killers of a hard
drive is heat and in their drive to make these external drives you
see advertised small, sexy and quiet, they often forgo cooling on
them. For occasional use, they seem to be fine, but if you are
using the drive a lot, they tend to run hot. There is also the KF23 which
has 2 fans in front although the one seems to be fine for my use.
They also have this gadget (which I have, but have not gotten around
to playing with) that will plug onto the back of a removable tray
and give you the equiv. of an external case - provides a USB2 interface.

One thing to watch with many of these "mobile racks" is the fans - I
have not found the perfect one yet - you have two choices in fans:
cheaper and cheapest  The cheaper ones are at least ball bearing
and seem to last while the cheapest ones are a bushing fan and within
a year or less of continuous use, start making very strange noises as
they fail.

Milkey thank you so much for placing your version of this procedure where it belongs under it’s own heading, but...... in your rewording/editing/padding of same, I was a little alarmed to note that you decided to omit from a pervious write-up, a very important action and substitute it with a lesser. I refer to one of the posts (yes its mine He! he!), which I assume went some way in the helping you with yours. Which I have copied/pasted from following link:
http://www.itsmygallery.com/ProShow/vie ... 5358#15358

It reads as follows:
[i]“Yes kept getting the same as you it is Broadband against/File size...., but here’s a work around that worked on both my Pc’s ….. click on vidqueen’s link then once Jennifer’s Keyframing ‘Play Tutorial’ screen displays, DO NOT select to play her tutorial just allow the show to just sit there doing nothing.

Then I think you know what I'm about to say…..but maybe some others don’t….so Open Explorer and go to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp
Where the shows file will be loading. You might see that the file size is quite small, well by (every few minutes) right hand mouse clicking on any open space within the Temp folder then selecting ‘Refresh’ you will see the file size increase in size each time. Wait until the file size reaches a minim of 213/214 MB then play safe and wait 2 more minutes before copying (you can’t move it) the file to your desktop, then rename file from xxx.tmp to xxx.px . Now you should shut down Jennifer’s Keyframing ‘Play Tutorial’ window and open the desktop show.
Oh one last point, it took (on my broadband link) 30 mimutes to download the 10 minute show.

Andy - yes the "Refresh" will show the increasing size so that you know
it has not frozen (and I didn't address the frozen issue), however, if you
just watch the file size in the explorer window, you will see it suddenly
jump to the final size. That happens when Presenter has finished the
download - at that point you know it is done with the download. As for
the freezing issue, it sort of slipped my mind because I usually use a
different method to watch for a freeze -- I watch the data transfer lite
on my router -- if it suddenly gets very quiet, I suspect something has
changed. Your comment on the refresh is a valid one though. I also
don't know for sure that the name will always be psg???.tmp (but it is
a good guess). My "version" is certainly subject to update from anyone
that finds additional issues or problems.

Yes, the link you indicated was what I used as the starting point -- I had
meant to include that in my post as a reference just after where I mentioned
"seeing the comments someone else had on how to save a show" but
in my collecting and stuffing information, it dropped through the cracks.
Yours was indeed what I used as the starting point and thanks for
providing that information.

Andy - I went back (I forgot I can edit my own posts on this forum)
and added the link to yours where I meant to put it in the first place
so others can see your comments too.

Watching the router lites only works if you have it where you can
see it -- I do since I have teenagers in the house, I like to see
if there is network traffic when I don't expect it (they have managed
to install stuff in the past -- Kazza comes to mind .. ). Just part
of being an "admin" (or is that benevolent despot??) in my network
at home (although I have also been accused of being a BOFH)

So....... I guessed right, but milkey doesn’t it make you feel so so proud (it does me) when our children use such words of endearment to prove they care and understand us.....just think about it a little !?!.
Over and out.

"milkey" ???? .. mikey !!

Don't take me too seriously -- humor is an important part of my makeup
(see my "Christmas Humor" show as partial proof .. ).
Both my kids are actually good kids -- he just got his Eagle Scout rank
and she is very active in Girl Scouts. I have served my time as a
Unix system admin which was where I originally found out about the
BOFH stuff. I try to provide useful information or help when I can,
humor when it strikes me and I refuse to take part in the flame wars
that seem to erupt in some of the newsgroups although most of the
groups I participate in are generally fairly nice.

milkey ... err I mean mikey

Just to have the last word....... I am genuinely sorry mikey for misspelling your name........... I don’t suppose you would believe me if I said that it’s my computer playing-up…Hmmm…….I didn’t really think so!…..and having now browsed through some of your posts (enjoyed your Christmas show immensely by the way, we seem to have the same outlook on/to life and our fellow man). It’s so nice that you are willing to share your knowledge and expertise with us lesser mortals. I tooooo know (or to be more accurate and truthful) knew something about Unix as I worked on Bespoke multi-million dollar Unix based cable systems, as a (Submarine Fibre Optics, World-wide blar..blar…blar) Senior Support Engineer and Lecturer, (which over some 20 odd years involved travelling and spending months at a time in (to name but a very few), Russia and East Berlin (both during and after the cold war) China, South Korea, Japan India, Saudi Arabia, USA, Alaska, Europe, South Africa, British and American Virgin Islands, Bermuda etc etc…………………………..
life was for the most part extremely educational. As it was safer never to travel with a camera, I had to be content with just collecting local guide books of every place visited.
Now regarding miss spelling your name…. actually I do suffer from a type of word blindness brought about by knowing a smitten of German, Russian, Greek, Spanish and my wife’s mother tongue Danish. (both our girls are bilingual) ….......now admit it........ most people can say “one beer pleaseâ€
