Bert, the simplest mask is black-and-white. If, for instance, you open a new file in Photoshop and fill the background with black, then make a square selection in the center which you fill with white, you will have created a mask. If you want to keep the file size small, convert it to grayscale and save it in the PNG format.

Barbara said to save the mask file as a .png file.

My question is ...... do "ALL" masks created have to be a ".png file", and I have several .png files already on my computer ... but they are colored (not black and white). Can these still be used as a mask in their 'colored' stated, or would I have to change them to "black and white" (grayscale)?

Thanks !!

Take a look here: http://fpvp.wordpress.com/masks/masks/

Also here: http://fpvp.wordpress.com/tutorials/

The article and tutorials should answer all of your questions.

The short answer is that masks can be any color or any number of colors. Their format can be gif, png, tiff, psd, or jpg ...
