Digital Juice Tutorial for Chrissy

Postby nannybear » Fri Feb 13, 2009 8:36 pm

Ok Angel here it is and I hope it helps.....if anyone knows how to use any DJ product that has "ipe" in it please let me know. Those are the only ones stumping me in Producer. Work great in a Video editor I am told, but I am not happy with the performance in Producer! Couple of slides need to change but it is too late tonight LOL  I am on my 14th hour of work and need to stop!! hugs Nanny

"ipe" meaning - Full Swipe - Transwipe - Swipe etc...... arghhhghhghghgh

The "*ipes" are easy to use -- you go into your video editor, use them then import the video segment back into producer  Seriously, if you are seriously into the shows, having a video editor is very handy and you can get something like the Sony Movie Studio for a fairly reasonable price. It will handle the *ipes as well as a bunch of other stuff that is very tough to do in Producer (lots of people have video clips they want to add to their slide shows - the video editor is the best way to handle those clips etc.) In addition, the Sony Movie Studio (or Premiere Elements etc.) typically can do a better job of actually putting your DVD and menu's together. You can usually get a reasonable price on those at places like Amazon etc (Costco just had the Sony Movie Studio Platinum on sale, but that is gone now). I find that when I am working on a show, I often use both Producer AND my video editor for doing pieces of the final production.

I could do one, but this one is probably as good as you will find -- they did a pretty good job of showing how to use Swipes in Sony Vegas (which includes Sony Movie Studio).

Ohhhh Miss Jan...what a little doll you are for doing this tut for me....I have been busy, I haven't been on the forum in a few days....thank you so much Jan, Now I'm off to watch your tut and play with the sun kiss kit I bought and have nooo idea how to use...yet! :D
many thanks,
Chrissy

What a cute tutorial! just watched.....hmmm ok I have heard about Juicer, downloaded it and installed it, I cannot get it to open..the program logo comes up for a few seconds then disappears leaving me a lovely error message! something about can't read memory.....is Juicer the only thing I can use? These Theme Kits are over my head! But, thanks to your tut I see the backgrounds and lower 3rds are easy to use..I'll keep playing with them.....what is an example of a video editing program? Is it because I don't have enough memory to run Juicer?
thanks so much Jan.......huggs, Chrissy

I would get a hold of Digital Juice for help with the Juicer issue. I use Adobe Premiere Elements for video editing but there are lots out there. If you look on the Juice Forum you will what ones they have support for as well. Hey did you notice that your smiling face was embedded in the Font Example at the end??? Cheers Jan

What was I thinking?? Why didn't I do a search here first... I've been at the DJ site for an hour or more, trying to get swipes figured out. Followed the steps in their Tutorial for producer exactly and it still doesn't work. The first picture shows through the swipe and still shows after the swipe has passed. Decided to search this forum and found Jan's tutorial. So,now that I know others are having difficulties, it makes me feel a little better. if Jan doesn't have it figured out, there's no way I'll be able to do it. In the meantime, I have Premier Elements so I guess tomorrow I will give that a try. I've been picking up some DJ items on sale here and there for a while and haven't done much with them, keep putting it off. Thanks for the tutorial Jan, it will certainly help me with the other products!

Yes that drives me crazy - I will have to check out that tut and see if I can make some sense of it. I haven't been happy with the quality when I use in PSP never mind getting them to work. So as Mikey says Premiere Elements it is! cheers and your welcome! Jan

Well, I've got a tutorial on how to use the double alpha channel transitions here:

http://www.photodex.com/sharing/viewsho ... alb=135843

For anything but getting started with these things, I do need to update ... these instructions are for the simple use.

if you're using these transitions in more complicated settings, this tutorial could be inadequate!

WRT simple swipes, it's a matter of putting the alpha mov first, the mov 2nd, the initial image 3rd, and the next image 4th on the slide.

HOW TO:
Single alpha swipes. Set the start keyframe of both MOVs at a time that gives a good viewing time for INITIAL image (so, let's say you set them up to begin playing 3 seconds into the slide time... for instance).
Set the final keyframe of INITIAL image to the portion of the MOV that covers the full screen ... this ends this image so that the NEXT image is visible when the MOV finishes its transition. So, you'll move your little play cursor around to see when the screen is completely covered ... put the final keyframe there!

The double alpha swipe's are a tad different The NEXT image is located under the matte (which is setup as a grayscale inverted mask and is located below the alpha mov and mov mask set) and will also begin when the MOVs begin. The INITIAL image may not need any keyframes other than the two default ones.

SEQUENCE:
Layer1 is ALPHA MOV (grayscale mask, depth=1, non-inverted),
Layer2 is the SWIPE (masked layer),
Layer3 is matte (grayscale mask, depth=1, inverted),
Layer 4 is NEXT image (starts when MOV swipe starts playing),
Layer5 is the INITIAL image.

Layer 5 will start getting hidden when the swipe moves start playing; when they're done, layer 5 is hidden, replaced by the layer 4 image.

A matte is simply a black and white video that'll be used as an intensity (grayscale) mask. These mattes can be used alone to create some interesting transitions or with their color counterpart.

THAT is it in a nutshell...at least the basics of it!

Dale

Thank you Dale. This makes it work for me. I only had the image layers in the slide with the swipes, not before and after. That made the difference. However, the quality is horrible. I'm very disappointed, it doesn't look professional at all. So I'm still going to try in PE and see how that goes. As always, I really appreciate the help from you technical people!

The quality of the video out of the juicer should be excellent! I export to MOV at the 720x405 ratio typically ... but will go higher (normal HD sized images) if I need to. Everything else is basically default (except I export the sound and any alpha or matte separately). So, if your video quality sucks, I'd look again at the Juicer settings!
