Create a collage in Photoshop to use in PSG

Hello there PSG users

I originally posted this link in the PSP Sample Shows thread, but as it contains some useful information regarding using individual layers from a multi-layered Photoshop file, I thought I'd also put it here.

The show outlines the use of layers in Photoshop and how individual Blend Modes (available in the layers palette) can affect the finished image. It also shows how the individual layers can be successfully used in ProShow e.g. merging images together.

Wow. I can't wait until I get to the point of putting something together like that. The music... how do you come by finding such pieces? It reminds me of another show I saw here called "Walking With The Dead" where the music matched the theme perfectly. For the most part, I never hear any of these tunes on the radio or elsewhere for that matter.

Glad you liked the shows... I think sometimes an idea strikes and away you go - which in my case doesn't happen very often :lol:

However, I was inspired by the theme of the March contest and I already had the tune in my head... it's been used as background music throughout a recent UK Television contest (Masterchef) and I asked my son if he knew what it was - which of course he did... it's from the original film score of the "The Matrix". Not something I would have known at all.

I loved 'Walking With The Dead' too - I only saw it recently - brilliant stuff. I can't find the original post from Forum member Mac, but it deserves another viewing!

I had to tell you that I made two beautiful collages over the weekend, one of Florence and one of the Cinque Terre. Thank you for teaching me this technique.

You did a great job with both... love the colours and the overall effect. Very artistic. Hope you're going to frame them and hang them on the wall

Thanks for sharing... anyone else viewing Viri's pictures - use the zoom/magnifyer to see all the texture and detail he has captured.

Thanks so much for sharing.....as I view your tutorial for about the tenth time I realized how much knowledge I am lacking in photoshop. I really want to try this over the weekend but I do have a question...........The pictures you used for the collage all seem to be cutout already......I know how to lasso a image and move it .....is this what I am suppose to do or create an cutout first ??? And if so how would I create an cutout if thats what its called......
Then can I use this collage in PSP?

Yes, the collage demo show uses cut-outs I did in Photoshop... you are well on your way if you can at least use the lasso tool. However for more detailed or accurate cut-outs you should explore the full range of selection/extraction tools to hand and you will have plenty of ammunition with which to move forward. There are many tutorials out there, spend a little time searching and you'll find lots to help you. I'll send you some links later on or over the weekend if you like.

But to start you off in making a basic cut-out, first up (and good advice I was given by an experienced Photoshop tutor), duplicate your original background image, then switch off the little eye-symbol next to it in the layers palette. That way you can always get back and start again! Once you have selected an object on your duplicate layer - hit Ctrl+J... this will put your new selection on a new layer above. Switch off the layer underneath so you are left with just your top layer/extraction. Now go to File>Save as... and save the cut-out as a png file - you'll find this under file type in the save as dialogue box.

The collage effect works well with cut-outs e.g. in my Rome Revisited show, but also, if you can check out 'Venetian Daydream'... the last two images, Piazza San Marco and Rialto bridge were done simply with photographs blended together.

The main thing to realise is that if all your cut-outs(png files) and blended layers/images (jpegs) etc originate from a single layers palette.. then the individual layers will work well in ProShow. Hope that is clear?
