2010 Spring Challenge. My Hometown - Port Augusta

Tue May 11, 2010 11:56 pm

Here is my show for Hunny's 2010 Spring Challenge.

I decided to take this challenge on with a look at the Past, Present and Future of my Hometown.
I have collected these photos over a number of years. All of the old photos come from our family albums and the quality of some is not great but I left them as they are to look old.

I hope you learn a little of our history, enjoy the present day section and think of our future.

Any C & C welcome.

Show runs 7 mins.
7mb
Nothing objectionable.

Cheers, Diane.

Hi Diane! What a fabulous job you did!! I loved everything about it - and what a great history lesson to boot! I thought your choice of music, background and the simple styles you used really added to this show. It could almost be used as a travelogue for your city.

Thank you so much for posting - I loved it!

Diane, your love of your hometown shines through in this show. I would have enjoyed even more of the history and the historical photos--I always enjoy historical photos. Do any of the descendants of the original camels remain?

Edna, and Ernie thank you for your comments.

Rob thank you for watching. Yes the fishing is certainly good. Nothing like a feed of fresh King George Whiting or Garfish. My husband and son both have a boat so a fair bit of fishing gets done.

Barbara thank you for your comments and your interest. I was rather conscious of the length of the show as Hunny suggested it should be 1 song and about 4 minutes. Mine was quite a bit over at 7 mins so left out quite a few historical photos.
As for the camels. They bred very well and are now a pest. They are in large numbers in the outback and a cull has begun.
The camels were used to transport provisions to the inland and the first train track from Adelaide to Alice Springs followed the route of the early camel trains. The train was called the Ghan after the Afghan camel handlers who arrived with the camels in the early days. The Ghan now goes from Adelaide to Darwin and is considered to be one of the great train rides in the world. There are also many descenants of the Afghan Cameleers living in our area.

Thank you all
Cheers, Diane

Diane, thank you so much for elaborating on the camels. There are several species not native to Australia that were brought there and are now disrupting ecological balance, aren't there? Regardless, I got so interested in those camels that I'm now hoping that, one day, you decide to devote an entire show to them. Just a thought. :D
