July Challenge Show - How to - Backyard Oasis

Postby tm-hranch » Sat Jul 12, 2008 2:37 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm willing to post my first in the contests. Mine is "How to create your backyard paradise". We're relocating and my husband suggested leaving behind a movie about the backyard so I decided to use this month's challenge as my motivation. I didn't give directions but we did build the patio and the waterfall from the ground ourselves! Approx. 6 mins long. Thanks to other member's for their templates.

Hi Theresa,

Love your pond. I also loved the nice image of the owl at the beginning.

Wish I had a pond like that in my back yard! Looks like a nice place to relax after all that hard work putting it in and all.

Theresa,
Wow! What a lot of work you and your "munchkin" helpers did. And what a beautiful result. Your buyers are lucky to get such a wonderful backyard oasis.

You and hubby did an outstanding job with the pond. It is beautiful! I just loved your backyard and what a wonderful memory DVD you have made. Thanks for sharing and joining in on this month's challenge.

Theresa -

Great "How To " Show! You really presented how you put the whole thing together. The winter really looked cold and I bet you couldn't wait for the spring.

Congrats!

Thanks everyone for your favorable responses. It is a wonderful waterfall to sit and relax by. Just listening to the water is so peaceful even late at night when our window is open. We will definitely miss it when we move.

Bob - I couldn't find the picture of the winter apparatus we created. Its a 150 galloon livestock tank feeder, filled it with water, put the pump in so there was circulating water, built a screen for the top so they wouldn't jump out and we put a cattle water heater on the bottom (in the garage of course). We could have left the pond go all winter. Lots of people do in Colorado since the winters aren't that bad. We have always shut it down because we are away for a few weeks over Christmas and didn't want problems happening while we were gone. Surprising how big those fish grew over the winter. Their growth slows down but they sure were bigger than when we put them in.

I'm hoping I can convince my husband to create something similar when we get to Minnesota. We shut it down over the winter anyways so that shouldn't be an excuse!

Theresa, I want one of those little oases too...just as long as someone else maintains it. I want to enjoy it, not work for it. :D

I really liked the little highlight you used at the beginning where it worked its way up, one thumbnail at a time. I'm drawing a complete blank on this. How did you do that?

Barbara,
It doesn't take a lot to maintain. The only problem I had was the dead mouse in the strainer basket. Paid the neighbor $5 to get rid of it. She's only 8 so $5 goes a long way!

The template I used at the beginning was the column list display by Dale Fenimore under member created.
Thanks Dale. Its a great template.

I had a little trouble with the top 2 pictures being just a little bit bigger. I figured out that the last 2 pictures weren't the same size but wasn't sure how to bring them down to the smaller size. The last 2 pictures were taken on a newer camera, different settings. I did try in Photoshop but I'm just learning that one so I left the 2 pics just a tad bigger. Will try to correct another time.

Thanks, Theresa. I'll have to search out Dale's template to see how it's done.

As for the variation in picture size, I never noticed it!
