Major info on how to put video on your website!

Postby nannybear » Wed Aug 15, 2007 6:30 am

Grant from the DJ forum has done a great
'how to list" to get video on to your website. This way you are not limited by Presenter. He really covers it all!! Cheers Jan

There are many ways to put video on the web and different tools to help make that happen. There really is a lot of info. I don't think can cover everything in this first post and will probably have to post more later.

I hope you find this information useful.

ONLINE VIDEO SHARING SITES

You may have seen websites with videos on them that say YouTube, MetaCafe or Revver. You can do the same by uploading to these sites and using code from the video sharing site to link it into your website. MetaCafe and Revver provide higher quality than YouTube, so you might want to look at those first.

Additionally, you might want to read their current terms and conditions regarding ownership of the videos you upload. For example, currently this is what MetaCafe says regarding uploads to their Producer Rewards program: "Q: Do I still own the rights to my videos? A: Yes, the Producer Rewards contract is non-exclusive, which means you can license the same video to as many different places as you wish. That said, your participation in our Producers Rewards program gives Metacafe a perpetual and irrevocable license to market your video to any other media."

- Every video on Revver includes lots of sharing options including "grab codes" in several formats which you can embed in many locations.
- Every video is available in both Flash and Quicktime format.

--------------------------------------------------------------

MAKE MONEY WITH METACAFE AND REVVER

You can even make money with MetaCafe and Revver.

MetaCafe http://studio.metacafe.com/ -- currently pays $5 per 1,000 page views. But, first you have to hit 20,000 page views to qualify.

Revver http://one.revver.com/go/faq#makingmoney1 -- currently they split ad revenue with you 50/50 based on how many page views your video generates. However, viewers must click on post-roll ads at the end of your video in order for the page view to count towards revenue.

Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite PowerPack 4.5 for $ 550 (Mac and PC)
http://www.sorensonmedia.com/pages/?pageID=95
The PowerPack includes the Squeeze Compression Suite, On2 VP6 Pro Plugin and typically a Squeeze 4 Training DVD.
Formats Supported:
- Everything that is supported by the regular compression suite as noted above.
- Flash Output with On2 VP6 Pro Encoder --- see more details below
- Mac users will also receive the Telestream Flip4Mac Windows Media 9 encoder plug-in.

The above pricing was taken from VideoGuys.com http://www.videoguys.com/sorenson.html

If you ONLY want to create professional Flash video for the web you need On2 Technologies Flix Pro for $ 249 (Mac and PC) http://www.on2.com/products/flix/flix-pro/

On2 is "THE" Flash encoder of choice by all the pros. I am sure DJ uses it for the DJTV. On2 is included, as shown above, with the Sorenson PowerPack as the On2 VP6 Pro Plugin.

When creating your Flash video be sure to: 1) create it using two-pass VBR encoding (variable bit-rate) which creates a much higher quality video than the constant bit-rate (CBR) encoding; and 2) create it as a FLV file and not SWF.

Flash has SWF and FLV file formats. When you create a Flash file to include it on your website you can make it a SWF where everything is self contained in that file, such as Flash navigation for websites, Flash buttons, Flash animations and Flash ads on websites. If you want to have a Flash based video you want to use the FLV format in combination with a Flash player. Here the Flash player is a SWF file included / embedded within your website coding and the FLV resides externally from the SWF file. The SWF file references the FLV file that is stored in a folder on your website.

Embedding Flash movies into a web page
-- http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Embedding_Flash
-- http://kino-eye.com/test/flashplayer/test.html

JW FLV Player http://jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player
- free for noncommercial purposes
- 15 euros for commercial use
- the above URL lists several plugins for blogs, such as one for Wordpress http://mac-dev.net/blog/?p=3

From above URL: "The JW FLV Player (built with Adobe's Flash) can be used standalone, without the need for the Flash authoring tool. The player allows you to show your videos more controlled and to a broader audience than with Quicktime, Windows Media or Real Media. It supports playback of a single Flash video file, RTMP streams or RSS, XSPF and ATOM playlists (with advertisement possibilities), a wide range of flashvars (settings) for tweaking both behavior and appearance and an extensive, documented javascript/actionscript API."

Hi Jan

I've been enjoying the posts on this group for some time and have learned that quite apart from dispensing your own wisdom you can always be relied on to point us in the direction of that disensed by others- much appreciated. I shall now pour a glass of wine and learn a little more!

Jan,

Thanks so much for sharing this source of information.

http://www.digital-web.com/articles/the ... eo_part_3/

I have never been that impressed with what I see displayed on YouTube because of the pixelated video. This says the video quality will look a lot better if the file is processed with two- pass VBR encoding. There is a sample of one-pass and two-pass VBR video found through the link above but it isn't working right now.

http://www.flashvideofaq.com/

Guess I'll have to try it later when the site is fixed

Another thing to put on my list to check out and fiddle with.

Thanks again.

Debbie
