The Dorset Coast (part 1)

Postby sierra whiskey on Tue Mar 09, 2010 3:56 am

i've been thinking about doing a show of the dorset coast for some while and i recently bought a new cd with what i think is a very suitable track for the presentation.
i'm lucky enough to live in a very beautiful county where most of the coast is designated a world heritage site. this show is made from photos taken over quite a while & includes some stunning pictures at the end taken by a friend from her canoe. the show is very simple with very little complication, a few layers & masks but no slide styles. i intended the show to be very relaxing in line with the beautiful music. it is just short of 6 minutes long, grab a coffee sit down & i hope you enjoy.

nothing offensive.

Hi Steve

I thought your presentation of the images and the various blends etc, was spot on - plus, the music with additional sound effects(?) worked really well. However, there was one thing that spoiled the show for me (viewing on a 4:3 monitor), and that's the uppermost mask/frame that you have used almost throughout - there was a point at which you lifted it (the shot of the guys in the boat), and I was genuinely relieved to see it disappear, but then it resumed.

I imagine the mask looks great if the show is viewed full screen on a widescreen monitor, but on my olde worlde set up, the contrast of the inevitable black bars made the edge of your images look too stark as they showed through the mask.

It's a lovely show though - you're very fortunate to live in such a nice part of the UK :D

I really enjoyed your show. You have some amazing coastline in your part of the UK and I thought you showed it off well with the effects and your choice of music. Unfortunately I must agree with Iris about the uppermost mask. I found it a distraction and was wanting to 'clean the window' so that I could have a really uninterupted view of the scenery. I was viewing on a widescreen monitor but still found it a distraction. Other than that it was a great show.

Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more of your countryside.
Cheers, Diane

Steve,

This was a nice "virtual" visit to that beautiful area. I have to agree with the comments about the upper mask in that it often became a distraction from the nice images. A simple gradient mask with less texture might do if you were going for a vintage vignette sort of look.

One other thing at 10-18 seconds - where you have the translucent text image panning so quickly. Slowing it down will better draw us in to what you were trying to do with that slide. IMO It won't matter if we don't get to read it all. I couldn't read any of it anyways so I missed seeing the picture under it all the while struggling to read the text. If it's slowed we can get the connection of why it's there.

Really nice choice of music for the show. I liked that very much too. :D

Thanks for sharing this.

Steve,

I saw this show when you first posted and didn't have time to comment. Of course I forgot to come back and happened back into it this morning. Watched it again and liked it even better than the first time. Some great photography and your choice of music was perfect. Just checked and iTunes has them so now I am the proud owner of Introduction. A little difference between your part of the world and my neck of the woods!!

Looking forward to Part II, when can we expect that?

Where did it go? The menu is there, but nothing seems clickable.

Barbara,

It's set up where you have to right click to get the play option.

(Well I'll be darned. I right-clicked to set it to full-screen, then didn't pay attention to the Play option.)

Steve, what an incredible landscape and what beautiful photos of it you've taken.

The frame, I think, is very appropriate, giving a kind of painterly look to the images. Perhaps what bothered several (and me too) was something you can easily fix. Softly darken those areas where a hard black line appears so it all ends up being more like a ragged vignette. I'm pretty sure it's the hard line that detracts. Other than that, don't change a thing!

barbara

i've yet to finalise my DVD or hard drive and i will revisit the border before i do so. i think your suggestion probably makes sense.
