Hit a brick wall with my music!

Postby Mac on Wed Jul 28, 2010 6:18 pm

Geez . . .

Last month we went on vacation. The kids and I just LOVE our vacations, and this slide show will be another one of epic length, perhaps 20 minutes or so. I had the music all figured out since we were on a cruise and the music playing in my head was a bunch of songs from my favorite reggae artist.

I can't tell you how much time I spent photochopping over 400 pictures! Not that I'll use them all, but there'll be plenty.

Here's where the plot thickens: the cruise was an extended family affair as it was my wife's parent's 50th wedding anniversary. I thought it would be nice to have a special focus on that, since it's really the reason we all went together. So I'm opening the show with an instrumental song acknowledging that and the song just sets a completely different tone. Now I'm wondering if I should make multiple shows (the HORROR!!!) or just go ahead and dive into the reggae. I imagine I can make it work, but such jarring changes in emotion are difficult for me to deal with

I'm going to post what I have so far, all half a minute of it , but I'm including the complete song for those interested in hearing how it progresses. The picture of the wedding cake is just there until I get a scan of one of their wedding portraits and the family shot after the title slide isn't going to stay in that place either. The timing isn't quite where it needs to be either . . .

I'm comforting myself with the thought that my wife's parents wouldn't want to hear the whole thing anyway :D

Hi mac, well I like the song very much and it really sets the mood.......when it ends and you go on with the rest of the show I'd go ahead and use regge, or cruise ship music, whats wrong with that?? You could blend them at the end of one and beginning of the 2nd song, I think it's such a nice idea, a wedding anniversary AND a holiday! in my opinion you can't make TWO shows!!! Oh no no, one big show is perfect and what an honor to your in laws! I am looking forward to seeing it when your done...
cruising is so much fun! I loved all 3 that we have taken!
take care, Chrissy

Hi Mac,

If you'll accept a comment from a real newbie - if I'm right in assuming that this cruise was a very happy time then I couldn't agree more that the opening music conveys the wrong emotion - it reminds me of my my wife's comment when she first watched my "Manu the Dog" (this was just me experimenting with styles and I didn't give much thought to the music) - she said the music made it seem like a memorial presentation.

Ohhhh peter, hmmm you know I went back and rewatched and I now have to agree with you! yup, your right...
Mac, maybe you should rethink the song? ohhh geee, I don't mean to stick my nose in your show...well yes I do cuz I'm nosey  but really I think an upbeat song would be better.....ok, I'll remove my foot from my mouth now! 8)
chuckle...Chrissy

Hi Mac

Are you planning on using the whole of this track - to a specific set of photos? Reason I ask is that I think the track's quite nice... but if you use it in its entirety, then the mood will be totally set and a launch into reggae might not sit well (just my opinion). However, if you start off with this track, I'm imagining a change of mood/tempo could easily be achieved with the addition of some clever audio trimming and the addition of a sound effect such as a DJ 'scratching' or 'mixing' - not only would it solve the problem of the transitioning between the two styles, it'd add some humor too

Thanks for the input! I think the bottom line is playing up the problem like Iris said instead of trying to cover it up. I'll make the change smooth yet jarring, and if I can't accomplish that effectively I'll change the song. Lord knows I've got tons of songs that I want to use in shows!

"Iris could not have said it better."

Oh sure she could have, but we'll cut her some slack

I've segued it into the next song with success. I should have known better than to doubt Toots and the Maytal's ability to conquer the forces of darkness! 8)

Now my next issue is my perennial problem of timing: my computers are never powerful enough to nail the timing within the program, so I have to render the show and find out where it needs to be tweaked

Oh: and I agree with you Chrissy about cruises based on this one! I wouldn't want to replace our current vacations with them, but my was it fun with a crowd!
